Why trust the Gospels if they are anonymous?

Muslims often reject the Bible for a number of reasons, but one objection comes up again and again which strikes at the very heart of Christian faith: the claim that the Gospels cannot be trusted. This claim is often supported by pointing out that nowhere in the Gospels do the authors explicitly identify themselves. Matthew never says that he wrote Matthew’s Gospel. Mark does not introduce himself as the author. Luke never signs his name, and John never explicitly states that he is the one writing the account. If the documents themselves do not tell us who wrote them, how can anyone be confident about their authorship at all? The objection is pressed even further. They point out that two of the writers (Mark and Luke) were not even apostles. They were not part of the Twelve, and they did not walk with Jesus in the same way Peter or John did. If that is the case, how can their writings be trusted? On what basis should these Gospels carry any authority?
