The Other Side of No Man’s Land: Germans at Ypres in WW1
What was it like to fight on the German side at Ypres in the First World War? In this film, we explore the German experience of the Ypres Salient in WW1, visiting surviving landscapes, reconstructed positions and forgotten burial sites to better understand the war from both sides of No Man’s Land. We begin at Hooge, where reconstructed German trenches help bring to life how the front line was built, held and defended under constant Allied pressure. Using original artefacts such as the Stahlhelm, barbed wire and battlefield equipment, we examine how German soldiers lived, fought and endured the conditions of trench warfare on the Western Front. From there, we move south to the Messines Ridge, exploring surviving German concrete bunkers and strongpoints. These structures reveal how the German Army adapted to artillery dominance, air observation and mining warfare in one of the most heavily contested areas of Flanders. At Poelcapelle, we visit the site of a former German war cemetery, removed in the 1950s as battlefields were cleared and reconfigured. This lost burial ground highlights how German war dead were often treated differently in the decades after the war, and how memory and commemoration evolved in Belgium. The film concludes at Menin German War Cemetery, the largest German military cemetery in Western Europe. With over 48,000 burials, it stands in stark contrast to the Commonwealth cemeteries of the Ypres Salient and offers a powerful reminder of the human cost of the war on all sides. This video is not about winners or losers, but about understanding the shared suffering of the First World War, and seeing the Great War as it was experienced by the men on both sides of the wire.
