BUTCHA MAN: Guyana is this year celebrating 60 years as an independent nation. Tonight, the News Room launches a special video series tracing the story of Guyana through the lives of its people. ‘Guyana at 60: Built by Many’ explores how people and communities across the country have helped shape the nation’s development, its culture and its very soul. The series begins tonight with the story of Butcha Man. For generations, long before modern facilities, it was the grit and ingenuity of local butchers that helped to keep Guyana fed. Using unconventional methods and makeshift slaughterhouses, they turned a trade into a lifeline for not only their families, but for communities. Today, we meet Abdul Haniff, who some call Butcha Man (as they call most butchers in Guyana). His family has been in the business for more years than Guyana has been independent.
