UCSF Spine Center: Welcome
Welcome to the UCSF Spine Center at the Parnassus Heights campus in San Francisco. As one of the largest programs of its kind in the country, it treats more than 10,000 patients a year and draws people from across the region and around the world who are seeking both answers and hope. The center’s approach is rooted in collaboration. Each case is evaluated by a team that includes orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologists, physiatrists and pain management specialists. Many spinal conditions can be treated without surgery through physical therapy, exercise, injections or medication. Other disorders — such as progressive deformity, spinal instability or nerve compression — may be best addressed with early surgical care. What sets UCSF apart is the seamless partnership between operative and nonoperative providers. Physiatrists focus on restoring movement and function through conservative treatments, helping many patients return to active lives without surgery. When surgery is necessary, UCSF spine surgeons — many of whom pioneered techniques now used worldwide — offer everything from minimally invasive procedures to complex reconstructions and advanced tumor removal. Innovation is part of daily practice at UCSF. Patients have access to clinical trials, state-of-the-art imaging and procedures pioneered by UCSF surgeons. Whether the goal is to relieve pain, restore mobility or preserve independence, every decision is made with one purpose: to improve the patient’s life. The UCSF Spine Center is not just a single location. It provides services at multiple sites throughout the nine Bay Area counties, bringing expert care closer to where patients live.
