Lestelle-Bétharram is a small town in southwestern France, situated on the Gave de Pau River. On its banks lies the Marian Sanctuary – Sanctuaire de Bétharram. Its roots date back to the 11th century. A long time ago, when pilgrims from all over Europe journeyed to Santiago de Compostela, there was a place here in Bétharram, perhaps in a hollow in the rock, where a statue of Mary stood. According to popular legend, it was discovered there, surrounded by a bright light; The priest from the neighboring parish of Lestelle—"star" in the Pyrenean dialect—had it transported to another location; it disappeared during the night and was then found where it had been the previous day. Our Lady Estelle, the one the Church calls the Morning Star, has been venerated there ever since. In this place, over 500 years ago, a young girl was picking flowers by the river. The waters were deep and full of eddies. Suddenly, to complete her bouquet, she approached the edge; his foot slipped on the wet grass; in an instant, the current swept her away. No one was there to hear his cries for help; but her faith was greater than her fear. She called on the Blessed Virgin Mary. Immediately, a branch appeared on the surface of the water from nowhere. The girl clung to it and was pulled to the bank. As a sign of gratitude for the grace she received, she commissioned a goldsmith to craft a golden branch, which she offered to the Virgin of the Sanctuary. Beth-arram literally means "beautiful branch" in the Bearnaise dialect. Soon afterward, numerous miraculous healings were also reported here. Over eighty miracles are said to have occurred here. In gratitude, the local population decided to build a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Good Branch.
