Every year, the “Lucy” Christmas lights on Bahnhofstrasse are switched on during late-night shopping to herald in the Advent season. Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse is bathed in a magical light, creating a wonderful Christmas feeling. The Christmas nights get their name from the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”. The “Lucy” lights comprise some 11,150 glass crystals and 23,100 LED lights, illuminating the entire length of the 1,050-metre stretch from Bahnhofplatz to Bürkliplatz. This Christmas highlight in Zurich enchants young and old alike every year. Christmas markets, Advent concerts and Christmas shows: Zurich is simply enchanting at Christmastime. The whole city is bathed in warm light, there’s a scent of cinnamon and mulled wine in the air and Christmas melodies ring out everywhere. Sunday opening and night shopping provide the opportunity to splash out on gifts. And, what’s more, Zurich’s hoteliers throw fantastic parties on New Year’s Eve. Zurich’s traditional Christmas markets come wrapped in cinnamon scent and festively adorned. At Zurich’s oldest Christmas market in Niederdorf or at the popular Christkindlimarkt in the central railway station, locals and tourists alike gather to browse the booths for rarities together. A particularly glittering feature of the Christkindlimarkt in the railway concourse is the 16-metre-high Christmas tree, decorated with around 7,000 Swarovski crystals. And take a stroll along Bahnhofstrasse and sooner or later you’ll walk past the unique “Singing Christmas Tree”. On a house-high, stepped scaffold with fir tree cladding, various choirs from the region offer the best of their Christmas repertoire in the evening. At the “Wienachtsdorf” on Sechseläutenplatz, with the opera house in the background, you’ll have the impression you’re visiting Santa Claus.
