Armero, founded in 1845 as San Lorenzo, was a prosperous agricultural center in Tolima, Colombia, until the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz on November 13, 1985, unleashed lahars that buried the city, killing an estimated 23,000 people (94% of the population). Reconstructed as Armero-Guayabal, its tragedy highlights the importance of volcanic hazard preparedness.
