The Private Army That Built the FBI: The Pinkerton Story
Before the FBI. Before federal law enforcement. Before the government claimed a monopoly on force, America relied on a private army. In the late 19th century, the Pinkerton Detective Agency operated nationwide, crossing state lines, infiltrating labor movements, spying on workers, and using armed force to protect corporate interests. Hired by railroads, banks, and industrial giants like Andrew Carnegie, the Pinkertons became something unprecedented in American history: a privately funded, privately controlled enforcement force operating at national scale. Their role came to a violent climax during the Homestead Strike, when armed Pinkerton agents clashed with steelworkers in a deadly battle that shocked the nation and forced Congress to act. The backlash led to the Anti-Pinkerton Act, banning the federal government from hiring private mercenary forces, but it did not end the system. Instead, the government absorbed it. This episode explores how the Pinkertons filled a vacuum in American law enforcement, how private security became normalized, and how the tools of surveillance, intelligence gathering, and centralized control were later adopted by federal institutions like the FBI. If America rejected the Pinkertons, but kept everything they built, did anything really change? Written and hosted by Mike Droberg. Forgotten History is a 10th Legion Pictures Production.
