Dan Asher "An Anthropologist on Mars" at MARTOS GALLERY

James Kalm met Dan Asher in the early 1980s. As an early habituate of the East Village, Dan Asher saw the direction Downtown culture was taking, and decided to make the jump into being a painter. With no formal training, and scarce resources Asher, through his own persistence and commitment, established himself as an avatar of this scene. His trademark heads were instantly recognizable, but among the cacophony of the neighborhood, at the time of their production, this work was considered just another eccentric manifestation of the last dregs of Bohemia. This show brings together examples of his oil paintings, drawings, and sculpture and is the first to survey his thirty year career in the location of his flourishing.
