TNPSC History | முகலாயர்கள் | Mughal Empire | Important Questions | MCQ - Part 1 The Mughal Empire was one of the most powerful and influential empires in Indian history. It was founded in *1526* by **Babur**, a descendant of Timur on his father's side and Genghis Khan on his mother's side. Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi in the **First Battle of Panipat**, marking the beginning of Mughal rule in India. The empire lasted for more than three centuries and greatly influenced India's political, cultural, architectural, and economic development. After Babur, his son *Humayun* became emperor but faced several challenges and temporarily lost the empire to Sher Shah Suri. Humayun later regained the throne with Persian support before his death. His son *Akbar* succeeded him in 1556 and is regarded as the greatest Mughal ruler. Akbar expanded the empire through military campaigns and diplomatic alliances. He introduced an efficient administrative system, abolished the jizya tax for some time, promoted religious tolerance, and encouraged discussions among scholars of different faiths. His policy of *Sulh-i-Kul* (universal peace) helped maintain harmony among diverse communities. Akbar was followed by *Jahangir**, who was known for his interest in justice, art, and painting. His reign witnessed the growth of Mughal miniature paintings and stable governance. After Jahangir, **Shah Jahan* became emperor and is remembered for promoting magnificent architecture. His greatest achievement was the construction of the *Taj Mahal* at Agra, built in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. He also built the Red Fort and Jama Masjid in Delhi. The last of the great Mughal rulers was **Aurangzeb**, who ruled from 1658 to 1707. He expanded the empire to its largest territorial extent. However, his long military campaigns and strict religious policies weakened the empire financially and politically. After Aurangzeb's death, the Mughal Empire gradually declined due to internal conflicts, weak successors, regional revolts, foreign invasions, and the growing influence of the British East India Company. The Mughal rulers made significant contributions to Indian society. They developed an efficient system of administration and revenue collection, encouraged trade and agriculture, and promoted literature, music, and fine arts. Persian became the official language of the court, while a blend of Persian and local languages contributed to the development of Urdu. Mughal architecture, with its grand forts, gardens, mosques, and monuments, remains an important part of India's cultural heritage. The Mughal Empire officially came to an end in *1857* after the Indian Revolt, when the British deposed the last emperor, **Bahadur Shah II (Bahadur Shah Zafar)**, and exiled him to Rangoon. Although the empire disappeared, its contributions to Indian administration, culture, architecture, and art continue to influence the country even today.
