Yet, without human intervention to shape this land, this unique landscape, a tapestry of black, white, and pink, would not exist. Without human intervention, it would be impossible to welcome all the tourists who arrive from the first warm days until Indian summer. But this territory, both wild and managed, could still change. This is due to climate change, which is reshaping the landscape. The water level is rising inexorably and salinizing the land. It's a tragedy when you consider that 70% of the land is at sea level. Climate change threatens to turn the Camargue into what it was 2,000 years ago: an island lost between the Rhône and the Mediterranean. With rising sea levels, saltwater clogs everything in its path, even burning the grass grazed by bulls and cows. The landscape of *Crin Blanc*, the film that revolutionized the image of this land, risks becoming a salt desert! How will the gardians, the herdsmen, be able to continue making a living from agriculture or rice cultivation on parched land? How can this heritage be preserved? Some have protected themselves with dikes and rock revetments, like Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. But since 2010, public policy has stopped funding these defense strategies. The dikes are deteriorating as saltwater advances… Letting the water seep into the land is precisely what some proponents of “renaturalization” are proposing… What future awaits the Camargue? Dialogue among all stakeholders in the region seems difficult given the strong opposition. If the people of the Camargue wish to preserve their ancestral heritage, they must find a way to protect themselves from rising sea levels. The future of deltaic areas worldwide hinges on this.
