A couple was arrested on charges of mistreating their adopted children. A year ago, they had adopted three siblings, aged 5, 8, and 10, in a process that gained traction on social media after a video of their first meeting went viral. The new mother even became a motherhood influencer. But, away from the cameras, a different reality unfolded: according to the Child Protective Services, the oldest boy showed serious signs of violence, revealed thanks to the attentive observation of teachers who noticed bruises and changes in behavior. According to the Municipal Guard, the boy suffered systematic abuse, including fractures, cuts, sleep deprivation, and starvation. Guard Nilton dos Santos reported "very strong bruises" and marks suggesting "multiple fractures," while his colleague André Castelli stated that the parents showed "coldness" and "no sign of concern." The dossier prepared by the school indicated that the middle child was also a victim and that the youngest girl witnessed all the violence. The records also showed differences in treatment among the children, such as unequal snacks. Psychologist Paula Aprobato explained that adopted children already arrive with emotional vulnerabilities and that the violence suffered constitutes "revictimization." Judge Iberê Dias highlighted that adoptive families undergo evaluation and monitoring, but the case, which is under seal, should investigate possible failures in the monitoring. After the arrest, the three siblings asked to return to the shelter.
