HIDDEN in the Woods… What Did We Find? Rand, Goltho & Exploring the Limewoods in Lincolnshire
📍 Hiking From Rand to Goltho – Nature, History & Hidden Stories Hiking For Health – Promoting positive physical and mental health through a love of the outdoors 🏛️ Start: Medieval Rand & St Oswald’s Join us on a peaceful countryside walk beginning at the ancient Medieval Church of St Oswald’s in Rand village — a place deeply rooted in English history. Around this church lie earthworks and ridge-and-furrow fields from the deserted medieval settlement that once thrived here, with evidence of crofts and homes dating back centuries. Rand is also linked to James Harrington — the 17th-century author of Oceana. His family ties to this area give an extra layer of historical intrigue to our journey. 🏘️ Across to Goltho – Deserted Village & Archaeology Our route then heads toward Goltho, another deserted medieval village site with Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Medieval roots. Excavations in the 1970s revealed settlement remains, moats, manorial structures, and even a site of a motte-and-bailey castle dating from around 1080. At Goltho stands the derelict St George’s Church, a brick survivor from around the 16th century, badly damaged by fire in October 2013 after centuries of service. The exterior and interior of the church was featured in ‘The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Moll Flanders’ at approximately 52 minutes into the film. 🌳 Limewoods & Moated Sites Next, we explore the stunning Limewoods, one of Lincolnshire’s beautiful ancient woodland networks. With free-to-roam access, it’s a perfect place for mindful walking, woodland ambience, and discovering a hidden moated site nestled among the trees. 🌧️ Back to Rand – Rain & Reflection Finally, we return to Rand — rain, views, and all — reflecting on the connection between landscape, history, and wellbeing.
