Hiking an Active Volcano in Guatemala: Acatenango & Fuego

In this video, we hike up Acatenango in Guatemala. This volcano is really something -- an experience to remember for a lifetime. Volcán Acatenango is a towering 3,976-meter (13,045 ft) stratovolcano in Guatemala, famous for offering front-row, panoramic views of the highly active Volcán de Fuego. Located roughly an hour from Antigua, it is a premier backpacking destination renowned for overnight treks that allow hikers to watch Fuego erupt ash and glowing lava. We embarked on this hike around 11am, camped overnight in a hut on the mountainside, and returned down the next day. In the evening of the first day, we climbed up to the side of Fuego, to watch the massive lava eruptions. Then, the next morning we woke up at 4AM, hiking up in the dark to the top of Acatenango to watch the sunrise.
