Ever since I started showing what we do with software and ECUs on motorcycles, one question keeps coming up: How does it work – and can I do it myself? I'll answer both here. Honestly. And you won't like the second answer. Most people think it's just a laptop and an afternoon. It's not. I'll show you what really happens between "reading the original data" and "fully tuned" – why a mapping costs €400 and not €4,000, why there are seven different flashing tools alone, what WinOLS does, and why nothing works without a dynamometer with an eddy current brake. Then we add it all up: Flashing tool with an annual license: €500 to €2,500, WinOLS: €1,000, dynamometer: €5,000 to €50,000, and the ECUs that you'll damage during testing, at €700 each. A single flash takes 20 minutes, a grid has over 250 fields, and a clean data set takes weeks.
