Relative humidity (RH) is a measure of the amount of moisture in the air compared to the maximum amount of moisture the air can hold at a particular temperature without condensing. It is typically expressed as a percentage and is a fundamental concept in meteorology and climatology for understanding and describing the moisture content of the atmosphere. Relative humidity is determined by the following formula: Relative Humidity (%) = (Actual Water Vapor Content / Saturation Water Vapor Content) × 100 Actual Water Vapor Content: This is the amount of water vapor present in the air at a given temperature and pressure. Saturation Water Vapor Content: This is the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at that temperature and pressure before it becomes saturated, and condensation begins to occur. Relative humidity values can vary widely with changes in temperature and the absolute amount of moisture in the air. Warm air can hold more moisture than cold air, so if you have the same amount of water vapor in two different air masses, the relative humidity will be higher in the colder air. Relative humidity is an important parameter in weather forecasting because it affects how comfortable the air feels and plays a role in various weather phenomena. For example, when the relative humidity is close to 100%, the air is near saturation, and this can lead to the formation of clouds, fog, and precipitation when the air cools or encounters other cooling mechanisms. Additionally, high relative humidity can make hot weather feel more uncomfortable because it reduces the body's ability to cool itself through sweat evaporation. Conversely, low relative humidity can make cold weather feel even colder because it can lead to increased evaporation from the skin, which can result in a cooling effect.
