The Internet Is Arguing About The Wrong Thing

Jim Lill’s recent video claiming that preamps sound the same sparked a huge debate across the audio world. Some engineers agreed completely, while others insisted the differences are obvious. Rather than arguing about who’s right, I wanted to run my own experiment. In this video I compare two “different” preamps, look at why blind listening tests are so controversial, and explore something I think is far more interesting than frequency response or harmonic distortion… Why are we so certain we can hear differences when we often don’t even know what we’re listening to? This isn’t really a video about preamps. It’s about expectation, confirmation bias, studio culture, and why the biggest improvements to your recordings probably aren’t coming from another piece of gear.
