The question is, “how to advance on the path of devotion?” You have to surrender. There are certain characteristics that a person has who can surrender. This question was asked by Indra to Devi in Lakshmi tantra, “how to attain God?” How to get to your grace? How can a person continually advance on this path?” Devi said to Indra that let me tell you what Bhagwan Hari told me. “There are five characteristics that are there in a person who can surrender, who can take refuge in God.” That is a difference between God and humans. God will always accept the one who seeks refuge in him. A human being on the other hand will start weighing the options of what will be his gain or loss if someone seeks refuge in him. But God does not do that. You just have to go with a true emotion of surrender and they will immediately accept you. So Bhagwan says that the first characteristic of a seeker is one who does what the Lord likes. This is where you need to know what form of God you have faith in. If you love Lord Shiva then you have to offer water on the shiv ling. If you love Lord Vishnu then you need to do something that Lord Vishnu likes.
