SELPAK: Nasıl Türkiye'nin Milli Mendili Oldu ? | Neden Satıldı..!
SELPAK: How Did It Become Türkiye's National Handkerchief? | Why Was It Sold?! Some brands grow on the shelves, some enter homes, but very few manage to capture the language to the point of erasing the real name of an object like Selpak from memory. This video dissects the anatomy of that great habit operation that began in 1970 with the slogan "Throw away that rag!" and "executed" the centuries-old culture of embroidered, perfumed cloth handkerchiefs in one fell swoop. Looking at it with the discipline of an aircraft technician; while the pores of a woven cloth are like sheltered hangars for microbes, Eczacıbaşı overcame this feeling of "waste" with a fear of hygiene, transforming the public's desire for modernization into an industrial triumph. However, at the roots of this seemingly flawless industrial fortress lie Dr. Süleyman Ferit Bey's pharmacy laboratories in İzmir... Nejat Eczacıbaşı possessed a profound vision stretching back to his scientific discipline in Berlin and Chicago, but also bore the tragic scars of Turkey's harsh political history. The suicide of Vedat Eczacıbaşı following the 1960 coup, and the subsequent inheritance battles that spilled into courtrooms years later after Şakir Eczacıbaşı's death—a battle over the division of paintings and antique machinery—revealed the human turmoil behind that pristine facade. The family's disciplined silence during this process, which ultimately culminated in the court-ordered division of the inheritance into 120 shares in 2026, was, in fact, the greatest answer. Today, we are examining in detail why this national giant, which now occupies eight out of ten households, underwent a transformation in 2025 under the name Sanipak and was transferred to Malaysia-based Arch Peninsula in March 2026 for a record price of $600 million. Was this $600 million farewell a collapse, or a cool-headed portfolio strategy taken at the peak to focus on innovative areas such as health and technology? Companies can be sold, managements can change, but it is not so easy to remove a word that has been etched into the minds of a people and has replaced the object itself; Selpak's real triumph lies in that name, which has lived longer than its owner. We are opening the story of the strongest industrial reflex in the history of the Republic, which you will unknowingly touch when you reach for it on the supermarket shelf tomorrow; the file is closed, but the name lives on.
