How To Replace a Yamaha Grizzly/Kodiak Stator — No Flywheel/Magneto Pull Required

If you’ve already identified a failed stator or pickup coil on your Yamaha Grizzly or Kodiak, this video walks you through the complete replacement process. The stator and pickup coil come as one assembly, and I show the teardown, removal, installation, wire routing, and reassembly so the repair is done right the first time. Before replacing anything, make sure the coil pack and wire are good, the spark plug is good, the voltage regulator checks out, mechanical timing is correct, and everything else in the troubleshooting order passes. Then follow the stator output tests in the Yamaha service manual to confirm the stator/pickup coil assembly is actually the failed component. In this video I’m replacing the stator and pickup coil assembly on a Yamaha Grizzly. This job requires a fair amount of teardown since the stator sits behind the left engine cover, so take your time and work clean. The process starts with draining the engine oil and coolant, then removing the water pump assembly so every cover bolt is accessible (0:27–1:31). From there, I disconnect the stator and pickup coil wiring at the regulator/rectifier and work the left engine cover off the machine (1:56–4:58). With the cover on the bench, I pull the old stator and pickup coil, clean the gasket surfaces without gouging the aluminum, and install the new assembly using blue Loctite on the bolts (6:07–11:19). A few important notes I call out in the video: • Don’t use RTV on these paper gaskets (14:12–15:40) • Make sure the centering pins are in place • Align the water pump/oil pump shaft correctly before reinstalling the cover (16:35–17:22) Once the cover is back on, I refill the fluids and bleed the cooling system properly by running the engine with the radiator cap off and squeezing the lower hose to work out trapped air (18:36–19:35).
