In this video, we show you what to see in Palermo, which attractions are worth visiting, and how to plan a tour of the city, which combines Arab-Norman architecture, Byzantine mosaics, Baroque churches, bustling markets, Sicilian food, and the unique chaos of southern Italy. We begin our tour of Palermo at Palermo Cathedral. Its massive structure, towers, pointed arches, and decorative details demonstrate the many cultures that have left their mark here. Inside, you'll find the royal tombs and the Chapel of Santa Rosalia. It's also worth climbing the cathedral's roof, from where you can enjoy clear views of the old town and the mountains surrounding Palermo. One of the most important places on the tour is the Norman Palace and the Palatine Chapel. This is where you can best see the Arab-Norman style in Sicily. For centuries, the palace was the seat of power, and today it houses the Sicilian parliament. The most impressive feature is the Palatine Chapel, filled with golden Byzantine mosaics. Walking through the center of Palermo, we pass the Teatro Marmoreo, Villa Bonanno, and Porta Nuova, before continuing along the city's former axis, Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Along the way, we stop at the No Mafia Memorial, a site dedicated to the history of the fight against Cosa Nostra. The film also shows the Quattro Canti, also known as the Theatre of the Sun. A few steps further is Piazza Pretoria with its famous Fountain of Shame. Next, we visit Piazza Bellini, home to three exceptional churches: San Cataldo with its red domes, Martorana with its golden mosaics, and Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, full of Baroque splendor. Palermo is also a great place for those who enjoy local food. On Santa Caterina, you can find the I Segreti del Chiostro pastry shop, where you can sample Sicilian sweets. To experience the true rhythm of the city, we visit Mercato Ballarò, one of Palermo's oldest markets. It's full of stalls selling vegetables, fish, meat, and street food. We also explore Vucciria, a former market that transforms into one of the city's liveliest nightlife spots. A Palermo sightseeing tour couldn't miss the Teatro Massimo, the largest opera house in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. The famous final scene of the third installment of "The Godfather" was filmed on its steps. Further on, we visit the Capuchin Catacombs, the Giardino Garibaldi with its enormous fig tree, and the Marionettes Museum, dedicated to the Sicilian tradition of Opera dei Pupi. We then head towards La Cala, Palermo's former port, the Church of Santa Maria della Catena, Porta Felice, and the seaside Foro Italico. Finally, we venture beyond the city center. We show you Monte Pellegrino, with its Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia and a beautiful viewpoint of the coast, as well as Mondello, the most popular beach in the Palermo area. Monreale, home to its famous cathedral with golden mosaics, is also worth a visit.
