Leaving BookTube Requires a Public Explanation. Apparently.

Every few months, someone on BookTube films a video explaining why they're leaving. Nobody asked them to. And sometimes that video gets more views than anything else they've ever made. The quit video isn't a personal statement. It's a genre. Genres don't appear by accident. They appear because something needs to be worked out, publicly, repeatedly. This video looks at what BookTube is actually asking of its creators, including the ones on their way out. That means taking the standard advice seriously and following each piece down to where it breaks. The advice isn't wrong exactly. It's just aimed at the wrong target. Every piece locates the problem inside of you, and none of it accounts for a platform engineered to make you feel like you're failing. Along the way: platform labor, ghost followers, a guy who told everyone to ignore the metrics and then couldn't, and why not everyone on BookTube is playing the same game.
