AUSTRALIAN ROAD TRIP Part 13 : Melbourne to Perth : Kondinin Western Australia :
On this road trip, we relocate a motorhome from Melbourne, Victoria, to Perth, Western Australia. We have 8 days and will stop at places of interest, get the drone up as much as possible, and do so as permitted. Kondinin is a town in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region, located 279 kilometres east of Perth via the Brookton Highway and State Route 40, between Corrigin and Hyden. It is one of three towns in the Shire of Kondinin. The first known European visitor was Captain John Septimus Roe, Surveyor General of the Swan River Colony, during his 1848–1849 expedition to explore the south coast. He encountered Aboriginal people 55 kilometres east of Nalyaring, near Brookton, who showed the expedition several water sources before leading them to Yeerakine, just southeast of Kondinin, where the Aboriginal guides left due to territory limits. The nearby lake and well became known as Kondinin, though its meaning remains unknown. The town originated as a railway station on the line from Yilliminning to Kondinin, built between 1911 and 1915, when the government chose to develop the already settled district. In 1949, the town's bulk wheat bin and one at Notting, about 3 km away, were filled after a good season despite only 10 inches of rainfall the previous year. With around 300 residents, Kondinin is a vital agricultural hub for the region, primarily wheat and sheep farming. It features a TAFE centre, primary school (with the nearest high school 23 km away in Kulin), banks, shops, accommodation options including a hotel, motel, and caravan park, council offices, and a telecentre. The town is served by the Transwa bus to Esperance. The surrounding area produces wheat and cereals and is a site for Cooperative Bulk Handling. Known as the "Home of the Group," Kondinin is the birthplace of the Kondinin Group, a farm improvement organisation founded in 1955, now headquartered in Perth with branches across Queensland, NSW, Victoria, and South Australia. Originally a farmers’ self-help group focused on machinery reliability, it expanded significantly in the 1990s and now has about 10,000 members, mainly involved in large-scale cropping and livestock. Its research has profoundly influenced farm practices, preferred over other sources like consultants and government departments for reliable, impartial information. The Group operates an online bookstore selling manuals and guides, and publishes a magazine to share research and training. Kondinin’s community, known for its innovation, continues to greatly influence Australian broadacre farming and global agricultural extension, with its name still used as the brand for the Group. The town also hosts the Centenary of Women's Suffrage Gazebo. Credits and References: Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kondini...
