TRIP TO GANGASAGAR

Gangasagar is a famous tourist spot and holy Hindu site in West Bengal. Because Gangasagar is not directly connected by road or rail, travellers must first go to Kolkata. From Kolkata, the journey involves travelling 120 kilometres by bus or train to reach Harwood Point (Lot No. 8) or Namkhana. Next, a 3.5-kilometre ferry ride across the Muriganga River leads to Kachuberia Ghat on Sagar Island. From there, a 35-kilometre road trip leads to the Gangasagar Mela ground and the holy Kapil Muni Temple. To complete the trip in one day, leaving Kolkata by 5:00 AM is recommended. Buses are available from Babughat and trains depart from Sealdah Station. There are no luxury restaurants on the way, but clean, simple places to eat are easy to find. The large government ferry runs from 5:00 AM to 9:30 PM, leaving every 45 minutes. The ticket costs Rs. 9.00 one way. The ferry is big enough to carry many people, bicycles, and motorcycles. Upon arriving at Kachuberia Ghat, travellers can take a shared cab or a bus. The cab drops passengers off at a parking area, located just 200 metres from the Kapil Muni Temple and 700 metres from the beach. Small, battery-operated rickshaws are also available. The beach is very clean and peaceful. This is where the Ganges River meets the sea, though a clear line is not visible in the water. The Story of Sage Kapil Muni Kapil Muni was a great holy saint. King Bhagiratha prayed hard to Lord Shiva, who helped bring the holy River Ganga down to Earth. Ganga followed the king to the island, touched the ashes, and freed the souls of the king's sons. This happened on the day of Makar Sankranti, which is why the festival is celebrated every year. Understanding the Ferry Timings The ferry is the only way to get to and from the island. However, the boats stop running twice a day for 2 to 6 hours during low tide. Because the ocean tides change daily, the ferry timing changes by 45 minutes every day. The local government posts the next day's schedule every evening at 6:00 PM. With plenty of time, visitors can catch a return ferry after 3:00 PM and reach Kolkata by night.
