This video was filmed during my time as an Assistant English Teacher (AET) on the JET Program in Saga Prefecture, Japan. Specifically, I was teaching in Kitashigeyasu-Cho (now named Miyaki-Cho) at Kitashigeyasu Junior High School. All of the events shown in this video took place on a single day in October 1991 during the school’s annual “Sports Day” (Undōkai). The video is set to the song “The Best” by Tina Turner, which perfectly captures the energy, spirit, and enthusiasm of the day. Sports Day is an important tradition in Japanese schools, where students, teachers, and families come together for a full day of athletic events, team competitions, performances, and community celebration. These events are designed not only to encourage physical fitness, but also teamwork, school spirit, discipline, and cooperation. In many Japanese communities, Sports Day is one of the biggest events of the school year. Students often spend weeks preparing choreographed routines, relay races, marching demonstrations, cheering competitions, and other activities. Parents and local residents frequently attend, making it both a school and community event. This video captures a small moment in time from rural Japan in 1991 and reflects the energy, enthusiasm, and sense of togetherness that made Sports Day such a memorable experience for everyone involved.
