In this video, we’ll discuss the characteristics of enzymes, essential globular proteins that act as biocatalysts to accelerate chemical reactions in the body. Enzymes are highly specific, each with an active site where a specific substrate binds, forming an enzyme-substrate complex that facilitates the reaction. This specificity ensures that enzymes only catalyze particular reactions, such as breaking down or modifying food molecules into usable forms. Common enzymes include amylase (for carbohydrate digestion), sucrase-isomaltase, maltase, lactase (for sugar digestion), pepsin and trypsin (for protein digestion), peptidase (for breaking down peptides), and lipase (for fat digestion). In metabolic pathways, enzymes like glucokinase help convert glucose into glucose-6-phosphate using ATP, and phosphoglucoisomerase then converts it to fructose-6-phosphate. This process is continued by phosphofructokinase, which transforms fructose-6-phosphate to fructose 1,6-bisphosphate.
