The Zêzere River is a watercourse in the Central region of Portugal. It originates in the Serra da Estrela mountain range, at an altitude of approximately 1900m. Still within the Serra da Estrela area, it passes through Manteigas and near the city of Covilhã, then flows southwest, joining the Tagus River in Constância, after a course of about 200km. The Zêzere is the second largest river entirely within Portugal, after the Mondego River. Its drainage basin covers 5043 km². The significant elevation changes, combined with the water flow, represent a remarkable hydroelectric potential, harnessed by three dams (Bouçã, Cabril, and Castelo de Bode).
