Here is the procedure of checking and adjusting the belt's tension on all Harley-Davidson Sportster models, only the free play value differs, which depends on the length of the shock absorbers. We adjust the belt's free play on our Anniversary XLH1200 2003. The bike has standard length 13.5in shocks and should have 7.9-9.6 mm of the belt's free play. As an experiment, we aligned the rear wheel with a caliper and checked the result with a special rod.
