He ran straight to his home studio, turned on the equipment, adjusted the microphone, and picked up his guitar to record the melody before it slipped away. He later confessed that this decision was crucial: if he hadn't done it at that moment, the melody would have been lost, and “Despacito” would never have existed. That same afternoon, Fonsi had a songwriting session scheduled with his friend and colleague Erika Ender, with whom he would work on new songs for his next album. But who is Erika Ender? Erika Ender is a renowned Panamanian singer-songwriter of American and Brazilian descent, with over 25 years of experience, considered one of the most successful composers in Latin America. She has worked with artists such as Chayanne, Gloria Trevi, Ednita Nazario, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Víctor Manuelle, Elvis Crespo, among many others. She has also been friends with Fonsi for over ten years, with whom she had already shared several songwriting sessions. But going back to "Despacito," that afternoon in the studio, Erika showed Fonsi an urban track, as he had mentioned wanting to experiment with new sounds and explore urban music, since the musical trend at the time was heading in that direction. However, that particular track didn't convince him. Then Fonsi showed her the demo he had recorded that same morning, and upon hearing that chorus, Erika immediately recognized its great potential. They sat down to write, and just an hour later, they had the song finished from beginning to end. Initially, "Despacito" was conceived as a cumbia, in a style similar to Juanes' "La Camisa Negra," as its creation began with a guitar. Around that time, Fonsi met the Colombians Andrés Torres and Mauricio Rengifo, renowned producers who were making a name for themselves in the Latin music scene. They soon began working together on several songs, and when Fonsi showed them the demo of "Despacito," they convinced him that it shouldn't remain a cumbia, but rather become a reggaeton pop song with international potential. Despite Fonsi's fear of venturing into a genre he had never explored, he decided to trust his producers' vision, and he was right. It was at that point that Torres and Rengifo suggested removing the second verse of the song and inviting an urban artist to contribute the energy and flow needed to take "Despacito" to another level. The first artist Fonsi thought of to collaborate with on "Despacito" was Nicky Jam, with whom he already had a close friendship. Nicky loved the song and didn't hesitate to record his verse. With his contribution, "Despacito" was mixed, mastered, and ready for release. The record label had already set the release date: January 13, 2017. But then everything fell apart… In December 2016, just weeks before the release, Nicky Jam had to drop out of the project. The reason: two days after the release of "Despacito," he also had his own single scheduled to be released, and the promotion of both songs would have clashed.
