Emotional Regulation: The Forgotten Measure of a Man

What does true strength look like? Our culture often equates masculinity with dominance, loudness, or winning every argument. But Islam offers a completely different definition. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that true strength is found in self-restraint—especially in moments of anger. In this reflection, I explore the importance of emotional regulation, the qualities we teach our sons and daughters, and how our expectations shape marriages, families, and communities. I also discuss the consequences of excusing harmful behaviour in boys while expecting emotional discipline and modesty primarily from girls. If we want stronger families and healthier communities, we must raise boys and girls with the same commitment to character, accountability, humility, and self-restraint.
