German Slip Stitch Selvedge How-To | Finishing Technique for Edges | Knitting Lessons for Beginners
This knitting technique is an easy one to learn and creates a 'chain stitch' appearance on the selvedges of your work. It is simply an attractive edge-finishing technique. I am demonstrating this particular slip stitch edging using stockinette stitch as the main pattern, but you can add this edging onto each side of many patterns including garter stitch and seed stitch. You just have to add two different stitches to each row; Row 1 (and subsequent odd-numbered rows): Add a knit stitch at the beginning of the row, and add a stitch at the end of the row which you will slip purlwise with the yarn in back (i.e. with the yarn behind the needles) Row 2 (and subsequent even-numbered rows): Add a purl stitch at the start of the row, and add a stitch at the end of the row which will be slipped purlwise with the yarn in front (i.e. with the yarn in front of the needles) (Note: In stockinette stitch, the knit/purl stitches at the start of the rows are already included in the stockinette pattern, so don't need to be added as extras.) Because you are adding 2 stitches every row, one at either end, you will most likely need to cast on 2 extra stitches compared to how many stitches the pattern tells you to cast on. For example, if a pattern tells you to cast on 40 stitches...cast on 42 instead. (This only applies to flat knitting, not circular knitting.)
