What Years With LGDs Taught Me About Their Coats

When I first got my Anatolian Shepherd Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs, I wasn't paying attention to their coats. Honestly, I didn't know enough about LGDs to even think about it. Over the years, though, I started noticing differences between my dogs—how they handled weather, how they worked, how they matured, and even how they seemed to fit different roles on the homestead. One thing I kept coming back to was their coats. In this video, I share some of the observations I've made while living with Bo and Franny and why I believe a dog's coat can tell you more than many people realize. These aren't expert theories or breed-standard discussions. They're lessons learned through years of raising, working with, and making mistakes with livestock guardian dogs on our Montana ranch. If you're new to LGDs or trying to better understand the dogs you already have, I hope this video gives you something to think about the next time you're out with your guardians. 0:00 The "Magic" of LGD Genetics 1:15 Meet Bo & Franny: Pyrenees vs. Anatolian Mix 2:30 How the Double Coat Protects Against Predators 3:45 The Truth About LGDs in Extreme Cold 5:10 Why Great Pyrenees Overheat (and how they cool down) 7:20 Anatolian Shepherds: Built for Heat Extremes 9:15 Comparing the Undercoats (Side-by-Side) 11:00 The #1 Grooming Mistake I Made 13:30 Advice for New LGD Owners "Welcome to Guardians of the Homestead.
