This video is a recording of the program Genius & Madness at Brainwash Festival 2024. Genius & Madness: From the atomic bomb to AI: the boundary between science and insanity is often vague. Together with Chilean writer Benjamín Labatut and philosopher Haroon Sheikh, we’ll investigate how groundbreaking scientists have shaped our worldview. And at times – in their quest for ultimate knowledge - have brought about more destruction than we could ever have thought possible. About Benjamín Labatut: Benjamín Labatut is a Chilean author born in the Netherlands in 1980. He was raised in The Hague before settling in Chile, where he lives and works. He is the author of Antarctica starts here, After the Light, The Stone of Madness and When We Cease to Understand the World. In this book he explores the ecstasy and agony of scientific breakthroughs. It has been translated into over thirty languages and was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize and the National Book Award and won the English PEN Award. Over Benjamín Labatut: De Chileense schrijver Benjamín Labatut werd in 1980 in Rotterdam geboren en woonde een deel van zijn jeugd in Den Haag. Zijn derde boek Het blinde licht (2020) werd in vele talen vertaald en stond op de shortlist van de International Booker Prize. In dit boek beschrijft hij het leven, werk en de impact van baanbrekende wetenschappers als Fritz Haber, Werner Heisenberg en Alexander Grothendieck.
