All you need to do is slide it into the hitch and secure it with the locking pins provided. This will keep it safe and also it is fully lockable onto your car. The actual rack will suit near enough ll bikes from kids 14" wheels all the way up to those big 29ers. The rack try design arms can slide left or right which will greatly decrease any bike to bike contact and any chance of scratching.
