Quake II (2023) Speedrun: Nintendo 64 Maps Easy 100% Kills/100% Secrets in 30:16 (RTA no loads) WR
56 seconds improvement over my previous uploaded video, that's nearly a minute by the way. This is mainly due to better strats being found since mid-December as this game got accepted for the upcoming ESA Winter 2024 speedrun event. One of the newer tricks was figured out a few hours before recording this PB which was holding the weapon wheel to enable super slow speed which helped me reach the early exit in level 13 (lava stage) without having to use rockets at all. One of the main differences Easy (& Medium) has over Nightmare for 100% secrets is that there's 1 less secret in level 6 (Unit 2, stage 2) as both the switch and Quad Damage powerups are not there in the room where you place the 3rd explosive. RTA No loads mean it's measured in real time from first control to final stage clear trigger but final time does not count towards loading screens as seen after the world map screen. Played on PC so that nearly every weapon I want to select is easy to reach. Shift = Grenade Launcher \ = Hyper Blaster Side mouse button = Mini-gun Mouse wheel button = BFG Right Click = Rockets Shotguns and Machine Gun still use keys 2-4. The run is done on Easy to fully abuse damage boosting from my rockets/BFG balls. FAQ: Q: The movement looks very casual compared to other Quake 2 speedruns why is that? A: The N64 map pack has disabled crouching, strafe jumping and has a delayed jump mechanic so that you cannot jump immediately after touching the ground. There's a few movement tricks that still work including: circle jumping, damage boosting, zig-zagging and wall running. Q: You pickup certain items for no good reason are you playing too safe? A: The route isn't fully finalised and there's a sense of improvisation when doing these runs. Though some of the item pickups are required to be collected in order to spawn the extra bad guys to reach 100% kills. Q: Level 17 (Unit 5, stage 7) I can only find 1 secret, where is the other? A: The adrenaline pickup next to the Icarus spawn near the twisty staircase IS a secret trigger but the text never pops up, this oddity occurs in the original N64 version too.
