Pre-trial Detention and alternatives to detention - what European Lawyers need to know
On 12 June 2026, the European Lawyers Foundation and the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) organised a webinar on ‘Pre-trial detention and alternatives to detention – what European lawyers need to know’. There was first a presentation by Council of Europe experts on the Council of Europe Guide for National Preventive Mechanisms on monitoring procedural rights in pre-trial detention and material detention conditions, followed by three presentations from the defence perspective: on the overuse of pre-trial detention - causes and consequences; mutual trust without mutual protection: the asymmetric logic of pre-trial detention in cross-border cases; and the need for further EU action.
