How to Crochet and Block a Snowflake | Can we block with gelatin? In this video we talk about how to crochet but especially about how to block a snowflake. The snowflake pattern is not my personal pattern, but it is a pattern from the internet. I used a mercerized cotton yarn Yarnart Begonia and a brocade thread, worked with a 1.75 crochet hook. However, the pattern is very versatile and can be adapted depending on what materials you have. Knowledge of the starting knot, chain stitch, slip stitch, double crochet and triple crochet is necessary to work this pattern with me. We start with 7 chain stitches which we close with a slip stitch, thus forming a circle. Row 1 we work 3 chain stitches and two double crochets, then three chain stitches, then we repeat 3 double crochets and 3 chain stitches until we have 6 groups of 3 double crochets connected by 3 chain stitches. We finish with a slip stitch in the 3rd chain stitch with which we started row 1. We start row 2 and we make slip stitches until we reach the first space with 3 chain stitches. Here we work 3 chain stitches, 2 double crochets and 5 chain stitches, then another group of 3 double crochets. We repeat this sequence in each 3 chain stitch space (3 double crochets, 5 chain stitches, 3 double crochets). We end this row with a slip stitch in the 3rd stitch. We start row 3 and slip stitch until we reach the first 5 chain stitch space. Here we work 3 chain stitches, 2 double crochets, 3 chain stitches, 3 double crochets, 5 chain stitches, 3 double crochets, 3 chain stitches and 3 double crochets. Similarly, we work 3 double crochets, 3 chain stitches, 3 double crochets, 5 chain stitches, 3 double crochets, 3 chain stitches and 3 double crochets in each 3 chain stitch space of the previous crocheted row. We finish with a slipped crochet in the 3rd stitch of the starting chain. Row 4 is the last row of this pattern and this is the moment when we can change to another color, but it is not necessary. The pattern looks very good in one color too. We start with a chain stitch and then make short crochets in each stitch until the first space with 3 chain stitches. In this we work 5 short crochets. We go further and make 3 single crochets. We get to the next chain of 5 chain stitches, We make 2 chain stitches, 1 double crochet, 2 chain stitches and a slip stitch, 4 chain stitches, 2 triple crochet and 4 chain stitches, then 2 chain stitches, 1 double crochet, 2 chain stitches and a slip stitch, we continue with single crochets until the next space of 3 chain stitches where we work 5 single crochets, then 3 more single crochets in the double crochets from the previous row. We do this in each corner of the star. How do we block a crocheted snowflake? To block it I used a gelatin bag that I soaked in 100 ml of water for 10 minutes. Then I warmed it up a little to liquefy it, be careful because gelatin loses its properties at temperatures above 30 degrees. Watch the video for more details.
