End of an era for the Swanage lifeboat crew
On February 1 2015, the Swanage lifeboats launched down their slipway for the last time. The current slipway and lifeboat station are to be taken down to make room for a new purpose-built station that will house a new Shannon lifeboat, due to arrive in 2016. Many local residents and well-wishers came to see the final launch. Coxswain Martin Steeden said, 'Sunday marked the end of an era for Swanage RNLI. During my 37 years on the crew the current station has been the base for our lifeboats and it will be sad to see it go, but we look forward the new station that should see us through the next 100 years and possibly beyond!'
