In 985 AD, an abbot named Adam decided to build a castle on a rocky outcrop in the Upper Pescara Valley... Not to conquer. To survive. He brought in the inhabitants of the small settlements scattered around Peteliano and Montefalcone, and thus was born what is now called Pietranico. A village that still bears its origin in its name: Petra Iniqua, stone set on a steep hill. Because even before the castle, even before the Benedictine monks, there was only rock. And those who worked on the rock carved tubs directly into the stone to press the grapes. The name of this place appears on the bronze doors of the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria, cast in 1191. Not many villages can say the same. In 1613, a farmer named Domenico Del Biondo saw the Madonna appear on a land parched by drought. On the site of the miracle, the Oratory of Santa Maria della Croce was built, one of the masterpieces of Abruzzo's Baroque style, with frescoes no one would expect to find up there, behind a seemingly unpromising stone façade. In September 1807, while anti-French bandits were spreading terror across half the province, Pietranico became the site of a secret meeting of rebel mob leaders. Cristallini, Santoro, and the others gathered right here, in the hilltop village that had kept secrets for a thousand years.
