A short documentary presenting an overview of the numismatics and monetary history of the Roman Republic (509-43 BC), examining the various periods of minting and discussing in some detail, several of the most important and some interesting coins, allowing us to see what are the most interesting features of this important historical period: from primitive times, the First (264-241 BC) and Second (218-204 BC) Punic Wars, the period of expansion, the struggles between the party popular of Mario and the aristocrats of Sulla (and their dictatorship) until the final crisis of the Republic with the Civil War between Caesar and Pompey the Great and later, the Second Triumvirate (43-31 BC). The class has been organized into sections: 00:01: General introduction and video presentation 00:45: The primitive and pre-denarius periods: aes rude, aes signatum, aes grave; didrachms from the "Roman-Campanian" series and quadrigatii (280-212 BC). 08:55: The reform of the denarius (211 BC); the classical Roman monetary system of the Republic: denarii, quinaries, sesterces; the Roman as and its fractions (semis, triens, quadrans, sextans, ounce); the victoriatus, currency of military payment. Evolution of the typology of the republican denarius. 14:30: Coins of the monetary triumvirs and the reasons for their choices of designs for their silver coins. 21:35: Coins issued by magistrates and authorities other than the monetary triumvirs. Military coinage of the "imperators", the generals during campaigns and civil wars. 26:25: Bronze in the late Republic; the reform of the Papiria Law; bronze emissions during civil wars; final farewell.
