The Birthplace of the Persian Empire
Pasargadae was the first capital of the Persian Empire and the royal city founded by Cyrus the Great. Unlike the later capitals of Persepolis and Susa, it was not a dense urban center, but a vast royal landscape of palaces, gardens, water channels, audience halls, and the famous Tomb of Cyrus. In this video, we explore the history, archaeology, and reconstruction of Pasargadae, from Cyrus's victory over the Medes and the rise of the Achaemenid Empire, to the development of early Persian architecture, the origins of the Persian garden tradition, and the enduring symbolic importance of the site as the birthplace of the Persian Empire. The video also examines the Tomb of Cyrus, Alexander the Great's visit to the site, and the archaeological remains that reveal what this remarkable royal complex may once have looked like.
