We often believe we are adults making free choices, but inside, parts of ourselves learned in childhood continue to operate. In this video, we talk about the Parent ego state, an internal part that forms from what we saw, heard, and received from our authority figures: mother, father, caregivers, teachers, or other significant adults. The Parent ego state can express itself as a critical, demanding, rigid, guilt-inducing, or controlling voice. But it can also manifest as a protective, loving, and orderly one. When there are unresolved childhood wounds, we often continue to obey internal commands such as: “Don’t bother me.” “Don’t cry.” “You have to be able to do it on your own.” “You must do it perfectly.” “You can’t make mistakes.” “Others come first, then you.” And so, the wounded child begins to live as if they were an adult, carrying demands, guilt, and responsibilities that were not theirs to bear. This excerpt invites us to look more consciously: From what part of yourself are you living, making decisions, and relating to others? Understanding the Parent ego state helps us recognize the inner voices that still condition us and begin a more mature, loving, and conscious path of healing.
