The young Korean girls who arrived in Osaka faced the double whammy of racial and gender discrimination, and were unable to attend school. Because they could not read and write, their lives were even more difficult. They spent their formative years working hard and supporting their families. When they grew up, they met and married a young Korean man in the same situation. They raised their children with great determination amidst poverty and discrimination. In 1994, "Uri Seodang," a school for first-generation Korean women in Japan, was established in Osaka. "Uri Seodang" represented another form of national struggle within the Korean community in Japan. First-generation women were excluded from education in their youth and pensions in their old age. In 2001, the Korean community created "Sarangbang," a space for first-generation Korean women who graduated from "Uri Seodang," a private school, where they could end their lives as Koreans. Second- and third-generation Koreans in Japan visit "Sarangbang" to share the final moments of their lives with the first-generation women. It documents the warm bond between the first-generation women of Osaka, who are leaving one by one, and the younger generations, who are seeing them off one by one.
