#National Route 49 #National Highway Run #National Highway Double Speed National Route 49 is a general national highway that connects Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture to Chuo Ward in Niigata City in Niigata Prefecture. It is an important road that connects the Pacific Ocean side and the Sea of Japan side, and runs almost parallel to the Ban'etsu Expressway. National Route 49 runs from Iwaki City's flat city area through major cities in Fukushima Prefecture such as Koriyama City and Aizuwakamatsu City, and enters Niigata Prefecture at Torii Pass. In Niigata Prefecture, it runs along the Agano River via Agano Town and Agano City, then through Yokogoe and Kameda in Niigata City to reach the urban area. Route 49 was enacted in 1953 and upgraded to a first-class national road in 1963. In 1971 the entire line was opened on its current route. National Route 49 is used as an arterial road connecting Fukushima Prefecture and Niigata Prefecture, although some sections become difficult to pass due to snow accumulation and avalanches in winter.
