Fondly called the “King of Afenmai Highlife,” he transformed traditional folklore rhythms into a vibrant modern sound that has inspired generations. His journey into music began after leaving school due to financial constraints. Guided by his cousin, Sunny Odogbo Iyiodo, Benji learned the rudiments of music before joining General Bolivia’s band, where he honed his skills and toured widely. Despite setbacks and challenges, his resilience and passion carried him forward, leading him to establish his own band and produce an astonishing body of work, with over 100 albums recorded to date. Among his most beloved tracks are Itsaya Onode, Ayene, Emikhamie, and Imhonikhe. His unique blend of highlife and Afenmai folklore has not only entertained but also preserved cultural identity, earning him respect far beyond Edo North. In recognition of his contributions, King Benji has received several honours, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Nigerian Music Awards and multiple traditional titles such as Unogboghie of Avhianwu and Oshiozogie of Uzairue.
