Following our previous episode, "Izumi and Chiran｜Walking Through Samurai Towns," this time we arrive in Kagoshima City and step into the heart of the Shimazu story. From Sengan-en and the Shoko Shuseikan Museum to the old reflection furnace ruins, this is where the story stops being only about samurai life and becomes the story of how one clan pushed regional power into modern Japan. Sengan-en is not only a stunning daimyo garden with Sakurajima and Kinko Bay as its borrowed scenery. It is also one of the most important places for understanding how Satsuma moved toward modernization. From the Tin Gate, Main Gate, and Iso Residence to the bamboo grove, Cat Shrine, Shoko Shuseikan Museum, and reflection furnace ruins, this walk connects the timeline from the Edo period to the rise of modern Japan through real places and visible evidence. Before entering Sengan-en, we stop at Hirataya, a long-loved local shop in the Iso area, to try jambo mochi, one of Kagoshima's best-known sweets. Soft rice cakes coated in a sweet and savory soy sauce glaze make this a must-eat when visiting the area. Inside the garden, we also visit Ozenjo Oukatei and Sengan-en Saryo for local dishes, matcha, and wagashi. We end the day at Miyama Honpo with Satsuma jidori chicken, closing out this chapter of the Shimazu story. This episode is about more than beautiful scenery.
