Derived from the Italian word for "small house," these venues mirrored the cultural, class, and spatial ideals of an entire society, from the Tanzimat era to the Republic, from the chaotic neon lights of the 1970s to the silence of the 1990s. In the specific case of Turkey, the establishment of the Maksim Casino, particularly under the leadership of Fahrettin Aslan, and the emergence of Zeki Müren on stage, marked a turning point for this culture.
