EDITH STEIN: mujer y filósofa excepcional. Pensamiento filosófico. Guillermo Navarro
This lecture introduces us to EDITH STEIN, a philosopher born into a Jewish family at the end of the 19th century and the first woman to defend a doctoral thesis in Philosophy in Germany. A disciple of Professor Edmund Husserl, the founder of phenomenology, she quickly became his assistant and collaborator. Stein's philosophical research focused on the human person, interpersonal relationships, and communities of belonging, such as the state, people, ethnic group, religious group, and so on. She emphasized the meaning of values, freedom, and the rejection of totalitarianism. Throughout these years of research, Stein attempted to synthesize Husserl's entire thought through her own notes. Stein wrote of Edith Stein: "The grand style that governs the elaboration of these contributions, the rigorous scientific character, and the finesse she has displayed in them deserve the highest recognition." A long intellectual and spiritual evolution led her from atheism to Catholicism, to which she converted in 1921. She taught and gave lectures in Germany, making a brilliant intellectual contribution. The National Socialist regime prohibited her from teaching. Edith Stein decided to enter the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, where she took the vows under the name of Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Arrested by the Gestapo, she was deported on August 2, 1942, and interned in the Nazi extermination camp at Auschwitz, in occupied Poland, where she would be murdered seven days later. A woman with a fascinating biography, philosopher and professor Guillermo Navarro focuses on her notable philosophical contribution. The lecture took place as part of the 17th European Culture Conference, sponsored by the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council and the Provincial Council of Álava.
