GERMANY: YELTSIN ARRIVES FOR THE G8 SUMMIT

(20 Jun 1999) Natural Sound Russian President Boris Yeltsin arrived in Germany on Sunday to attend the final day of the annual summit meeting of the Group of Eight (G-8) leading nations. It is Yeltsin's first trip abroad since he visited the Jordanian capital, Amman in February to attend the funeral of King Hussein. Accompanied by his wife, Yeltsin landed at Cologne airport with his wife Naina and looked distinctly unsteady as he descended the steps to the tarmac. At one point he insisted on talking to the waiting press, pushing an aide aside, determined perhaps to down play questions over his ability to handle himself. Yeltsin's one-day visit to Cologne is expected to include a meeting with U-S President Bill Clinton and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. Much of the summit has so far concentrated on the reconstruction of Kosovo following the end of the NATO bombing earlier this month. The G-8 leaders will begin a final session of talks on Sunday with a call to North Korea to stop nuclear and missile development and commitments to Kosovo on the agenda. Russian Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin, who had been acting for Yeltsin for the first two days of the summit suggested Saturday that Russia would accept the idea of providing only humanitarian support to the Serbian Republic of Yugoslavia. Stepashin told a press conference that humanitarian assistance to Yugoslav citizens is different from supporting the Balkan country's political regime. His comments followed Russian anger at the refusal of the G7 nations to help Yugoslavia rebuild as long as President Milosevic remained in power.
