Can I simply replace the 10A outlet with a 20A one? And what about the other outlets in my house? Can I use 20A for everything? In Brazil, there are two types of residential outlets: the 10A outlet and the 20A outlet. The 20A outlets are the ones famous for having a larger hole, capable of receiving a thicker pin. But why do some devices come with this pin? This is related to the equipment's capacity. If the electrical current required for it to function exceeds 10A, the manufacturer already provides its plug with this configuration. There are still some cases of equipment with a current rating lower than 10A, but very close to this value, and in these cases, they also have 20A plugs. Manufacturers of microwaves, electric ovens, toasters, and other products already strictly follow this pin standard. The problem is that often, when the product arrives at your home, it's a struggle to find the right outlet for it. In some cases, people resort to using a 10A to 20A adapter, which is nothing more than a component with a thin 10A pin on one end and thick holes compatible with 20A on the other. This would be the same as doing the famous makeshift repair of enlarging the hole in a 10A outlet to fit a 20A pin. These practices should be avoided. But then what to do in this case? Is it just a matter of changing the outlet from 10A to 20A? It's not that simple. It's necessary to verify that the circuits are correctly sized, meaning conductors and circuit breakers are perfectly calculated. And if your equipment has a current greater than 10A, you must provide a dedicated circuit for it with correctly sized conductors and circuit breakers, from the distribution panel to the outlet. Can the replacement of 10A outlets with 20A outlets be done in all points of a residence? The definitive answer to this question is: YES. But let's see why. The NBR-14136 standard, which regulates the manufacture of plugs and sockets in Brazil, is very clear on this. In its item 3.2 – Compatibility, it states that 20A outlets must allow the insertion of 10A and 20A plugs, and outlets with ground contact must allow the insertion of plugs with and without a ground pin. It is clear that manufacturers are obliged to provide 20A outlets with the capacity to receive 10A plugs without compromising the connection. We've already tested Pial Legrand sockets here on the channel and shown that they perform perfectly, but we know that there are other well-known and reputable manufacturers that have sockets that follow regulatory recommendations. The problem is that we also know there's a possibility of buying a socket that isn't of such high quality, and using a thin pin in a larger hole can create poor contact over time, so caution is advised. In addition to carefully choosing the product, to make this replacement you need to check if the circuits are correctly sized, that is, conductors and circuit breakers perfectly calculated. So that's it folks, that was our tip of the week. Until next time. 💡 Stay tuned for #electricity 💡 __________________________________________________ Production and Editing. 🎬 Adoniran Freitas 🎬 Afrânio Freitas 🎬 Maecilei Leal 🎬 Dálcio Araújo __________________________________________________ Support: Life Print Company. 💻 http://printcompany.com.br/site/
